CORDA 3MOVE

From the energy of two small batteries a portable CD- or MP3-player nowadays feeds us with many hours of music. However, the use of a supply voltage of just 1,5V or 3V has its price. Many headphones require quite a high signal to obtain reasonable sound levels. The low supply voltage simply doesn't provide enough "juice" to drive these headphones properly and sound quality is impaired.

The CORDA 3MOVE is a portable headphone amplifier meant to "replace" the standard headphone socket of your player. It has an internal supply voltage of 9 or 18V (low/high current consumption mode) and thus much better driving capacities. Connecting this amp to you portable will simply make your headphone sound better. Of course the 3MOVE also has a built-in crossfeed filter which makes headphone listening more natural and relaxing.

The amplifier also has a built-in digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and can be directly connected to an USB-port of your computer. The quality of this DAC clearly surpasses that of the soundcards found on most computers.

All important control elements and sockets are found on the front of the amp so it can be used while being carried in a pocket or a bag. The volume control is relatively small and will not rotate easily while accidently being touched by clothes or arm.

The metal enclosure of the 3MOVE is very sturdy and the amp has been build to last for years and years.

The circuitry inside needs very little current and the amplifier runs for upto approximately 100 hrs on a single 9V battery (low current consumption mode). To prevent unintended current drain the amp has a LED-powerindicator.

To save batteries and to increase sound quality at home an external powersupply can be connected with a supply voltage up to 12V DC.
Technical details

Measures: 9.0 x 6.5 x 2.8 cm

Weight without battery: 155 gr.

Supply voltage: 6 .. (9) .. 12 Volts DC

Mean current uptake: 18 mA / 7mA
(high/low-current-consumption-mode)

Maximal amplification: 0 / 15 dB
(internal switches can be easily reached through the opening of the battery compartment)

Input impedance: 6.2 kOhm minimum

Output impedance: < 1 Ohm

Digital Resolution (USB): 16 bit

Sampling frequencies (USB): 32 / 44.1 / 48 kHz

The unit runs from a single 9V battery and internally the supply voltage is used to create a pair of +4.5 and -4.5V powerlines (low current consumption mode) or a pair of +9 and -9V powerlines (high current consumption mode).

Alternatively external powersupplies can be connected with supply voltages between 6V and 12V DC. The external supply voltage is internally doubled to create a pair of +6..+12V and -6..-12V powerlines.

Connected to USB the amp can run from the 5V powerline of the USB-port and no battery or external supply is required.

External noise is removed by LC-filtering of the supply voltage.

The total buffer capacity is 5800 uF to lower the effective battery impedance.

For amplification two single AD8610 opamps are used for maximal sonic performance.(No dual or quad-opamps!)

The USB-DAC is a PCM2702 made by Texas Instruments.

The high quality potentiometer is custom-made by ALPS and has a built-in ON/OFF switch.

The high quality crossfeed/stereo switch has silver-plated contacts and the 3.5 mm sockets are silver-plated also.

Inside the signal path only metal-resistors and high-quality film-capacitors are used (polypropylene).

The enclosure is made entirely of aluminium.

Accessories:
 2 mini-mini interconnects (goldplated)
 USB-cable
 tool to open the amp

CROSSFEED
In normal daily life people use various mechanisms to locate sources of sound.

Firstly, the sound of a source to the right side of the listener (e.g. the right loudspeaker) not only reaches the right ear but, attenuated and delayed, is also heard by the left ear. The level of attenuation and the delay time of this crossfeed signal provide important directional information.

Secondly, the soundwaves are partly absorbed and partly reflected by the tissues of the head. Reflections at the oracles (pinnae) interfere with the soundwaves that directly enter the ear-channel and amplify or attenuate specific frequency components. Since these reflections depend on the direction of the soundwave the "color" of the sound changes with the direction of the source.
Thirdly, reflections of the soundwaves from the walls, ceiling and floor of our listening room produce reverberation that conveys an extra feeling of space.

The information obtained by these mechanisms is further refined by movements of the head. Changes in sound levels, delay times and sound color refine the sense of direction. For a demonstration, blindfold a friend and ask him to locate a ticking clock that you have hidden in the room. He will start turning his head although he can't see anything. With his head in a fixed position an exact localization is much more difficult.
Listening by headphones

All the mechanisms of directional listening are missing when we use headphones. The sound at the right ear will no longer reach the left ear and pinnae-reflections no longer interfere with the original soundwave. Moreover, the headphones are directly attached to our head, and so head movements no longer add information. Reverberation is also not present.

As a result, the sound heard by headphones seems to stick to the inside of our head and to our ears and an unnatural soundfield is created. The brain misses logical clues for direction and this subconsciously results in mental stress. Some people cannot tolerate this stress and are unable to use headphones.

The natural crossfeed filter
In principle, digital soundprocessors can simulate all the mechanisms for directional listening but the results are, thus far, not very satisfactory. In particular, pinnae-reflections are very complex and listener-specific and impossible to simulate accurately.

Fortunately, the mean directional information is provided by the time delay and level of attenuation of the sounds that reaches the opposite ear. The CORDA headphone amplifiers can electronically simulate this process and, with appropriate attenuation and delay, add some of the right audiosignal to the left channel and vice -versa. This considerably reduces the adverse symptoms of headphone listening.

A unique feature of the crossfeed circuitry of the CORDA headphone amplifiers is that it "recognizes" the virtual positions of the instruments and singers in a recording. The sound of an instrument in the middle of the soundstage will be equally present in both audio-channels and isn't given any crossfeed. A crossfeed signal is only generated for instruments that are not placed at the center. The more off-center the instrument is placed, the stronger the crossfeed and the longer its delay. This feature is called "natural crossfeed".
