Every time I listen to this recording of the Sibelius Concerto, I get the feeling that on December 21, 1959, the stars somehow lined up in a special way. Oistrakh is a great violinist, and Ormandy is a great conductor, but for such a performance these facts do not seem enough. The way the second part of the concert sounds, I think, beyond anything else...
As one friend of Jascha Heifetz's work said: "You have to be born with a Sibelius concert. Heifetz, unfortunately, was not born, but Oistrakh, yes!"
