From the mid-1940s, he began performing with various jazz ensembles and orchestras, including Saul Yaged (1947), Joe Marsala and Barbara Carroll (1948), and Freddie Slack (1949). In 1950 he seriously engaged in the development of classical guitar technique, then continued his musical education in Italy with Andras Segovia (1954). From 1957 he directed his own ensemble in Washington. In 1959 he became a member of the Woody Herman Orchestra, with whom he toured England and Saudi Arabia. He headed the Showboat Club in Washington, at the same time he gave concerts with the academic repertoire. He toured South America (1961) and traveled to Europe for the second time, where he performed with Les McCann and Zuta Sims (1963). He recorded a number of records as a classical guitarist, as well as as a performer of jazz and bossanov - with his own ensemble, the orchestra of Woody Herman, the ensemble of Herb Ellis, Stan Goetz (JAZZ SAMBA, 1962) and others. One of the initiators and the first representatives of the direction known as Bosanova jazz, or samba jazz. While in South America, he began experimenting with Latin American rhythms in 1961, the earliest recordings he made with Goetz. He also experimented in the field of jazz interpretation of the rhythms of Spanish flamenco (flamenco jazz). He was one of the musicians of progressive and cool jazz.
